Kip Winger, vocalist/bass player for the iconic 1980s hard rock band Winger, will be the special guest on Hard Rock Nights January 22-28. The band’s most recent release, “Karma,” surprised many listeners and landed on several bloggers’ year-end “best of” lists. Kip will talk about how the band has evolved from its eponymous 1988 debut album to its current sound, and the songwriting process between himself and guitarist Reb Beach. Kip will also discuss his role in the MTV cartoon “Beavis & Butt-Head.” “I’m not one to throw stones at another band….As far as Metallica and Beavis & Butt-Head, those guys all took the first punch.” In addition to Winger, Kip has also just released a new record with his first band, Blackwood Creek, featuring his brother Nate Winger and longtime friend Peter Fletcher. Blackwood Creek “got together to jam as a lark, and the chemistry was still there,” leading to the album. Kip says the record is “very representative of what the band sounded like back in the day.”

Brian "Damage" Keats, who played drums in the Misfits during its final Glenn Danzig-helmed lineup, died Tuesday(Jan. 12) after battling liver cancer, according to a press release. Keats, who was 46, was also a veteran of punk bands Verbal Abuse and Genocide. Damage was first asked by Danzig to join the Misfits in the autumn of 1983 and played with the band at a Halloween gig in Detroit . The show wound up being the final Misfits gig with the frontman. But Keats, a Brooklyn native, was undaunted, remaining on the New York music scene throughout the 1980s, playing with a long run of outfits like Hellbent, the Kretins, the Hellhounds, the Skulls, Angels in Vain, Princess Pang, Raging Slab and the Diamondbacks. Keats eventually settled in Los Angeles and collaborated with outfits like Sylvain Sylvain, Low Pop Suicide, the Fusztones and even former Bangles frontwoman Susanna Hoffs, among a long run of others. He is survived by his wife and one child.
